CETRIP: Product Details

Cetrizine is a selective H1 receptor blocker- anti-histamin drug. It is partially non-sedating hence partially crosses the blood brain barrier (B B B). Anti-histamin drug, are class anti- allergics, which effectively blocks the effect of histamines. Histamine causes symptoms of allergy when released by allergic reactions in the body.

Mode of Action :

Cetrizine on oral administration achieves wide spread distribution. It effectively blocks H1 receptors & prevents histamin reaction with receptors. Therefore, prevents release of allergic symptoms & manifestations.

Cetrizine has also shown to inhibit eosinophill chemotaxis, hence reduces the possibility of respiratory inflammation & other related allergic manifestations.

Absorption :

Cetrizine is absorbed rapidly from GI tract . Food slightly interferes & reduces absorption. Hence cetrizine is advised to take empty stomach.

Cmax:

Cetrizine 10 mg / day for 10 days achieves 311mg / ml as peak plasma concentration. This concentration is required for skin allergic condition. Whereas for ENT allergies (like rhinitis) much lesser concentration is effective. 

Half – Life:

Half –life is 8hrs. where as the drug, in effective concentration, remains in blood stream for 21hrs. Hence the recommended administration schedule is bid for short term therapy and once daily for long – term therapy.

Excretion :

70% of the metabolite gets removed and excreted through urine & rest through fecal route.

Doses & Administration :

10mg / day empty stomach once daily . As much as 40mg in a day can be given.

PHENYLEPHRINE :

Phenylephrine is also known as stereo-isomer of norephedrine and norpseudoephedrine. It is used as stimulant and decongestant agent.

Mode of Action :

Phenylephrine is indirectly acting sympathomamatic with prominent peripheral adregenic effect.



Half – Life :

Half life is  –  2.1 to 3.4 hrs.

Side Effect :

Scientific study has shown risk of stroke in younger woman. Hence this drug is banned in U.S, both on prescription and OTC. Although it is available in Europe & other countries.

Other common side – effects are –

Apatite suppression, Nausea, Dizziness & Drug mouth.

Cetrip Composition :

Each tablet contains -

Cetrizine Hydrochloride   –    5mg.

Phenylephrine                   –  10mg.

Paracetamol.                     – 325 mg 

Each 5 ml of sy. Contains

Cetrizine Hydrochloride.  –  2.5mg.

Phenylephrine                     –     5mg.

Paracetamol                        – 125mg.

Rational of combination :

Change or frequent change or even fluctuation in environmental temperature, very often, induces allergic reactions. Such allergic reactions causes allergic rhinitis, rhinhorrea (running node), nasal congestion, body ache, rise in body temperature etc. The patient suffers from cold and fever. The underlying reason for all above symptoms and complications is allergy. Hence the top-priority for a medical practitioner is to control allergy. On the same time the patient expects quick relief from the symptoms.

Role of Ingredients :

Cetrizine :-  Cetrizine is a time tested & effective anti- allergic. Its therapeutic dose is 10mg /  day once daily or in two equally divided dose. for adults & 5mg / day in same doses schedule for children above 3 years of age. CETRIP tab & sy. composition has been designed for twice daily doses schedule.

The anti-allergic effect of cetrizine will relieve the patient from rhinitis & rhimhera.

Phenylephrine :

It is used as nasal decongestant in patients with allergic and vasomotor rhinitis and in acute rhinitis. This drug,decreases resistance to air-flow by decreasing the volume of nasal mucosa (secretion). This occurs by activation of various alpha – adrenergic receptor in nasal tissues. By decreasing the volume of nasal secretion, phenylephrine, enhances air-flow & reduces congestion. 

This activity provides a prompt & effective symptomatic relief to the patient. The daily requirement of phenylephrine is 20 to 30 mg / day in divided doses. 

Paracetamol:

Paracetamol gives antipyretic and omalgeric effect hence controls fever and body ache.

Indication -

(1).  Allergic rhinitis.

(2).  Seasonal allergic rhinitis.

(3).  Cold & fever.

Dosage & administration –

Adult 1 tab bid for 3 to 5 days.

Children 5 ml bid for 3 to 5 days.
